Spelling out, figures, with verbs

Spelling out: Spell out fractions of a whole in text and use hyphens. Use numerals to express more complicated fractions (such as compound fractions). Connect the whole number and its fraction with a hyphen. Fractions expressed in decimal form are sometimes the clearest and simplest format. one-third. The envelopes should measure
4-1/2 by 9-1/2 inches. The college library holds 1.85 million volumes.

Figures: Use figures when a fraction functions as a unit modifier. ½-inch thick.

With verbs: When using fractions and percentages, the verb should agree with the noun following “of.” Threefourths of the apple was eaten. Half of the employees are at a seminar today.
