Use 'who' when someone is the subject of the sentence, clause, or phrase. Use 'whom' when someone is the object of a verb or preposition.

Use who when someone is the subject of the sentence, clause, or phrase. The woman who rented the room is not home.

Use whom when someone is the object of a verb or preposition. The woman to whom the room was rented is not home.
