Always use figures to denote age. Based on context, years or years old is not always required. Ages expressed as adjectives before a noun or as substitutes require hyphens.
A 35-year-old student. The professor is 40 years old. The class is for 16- to 21-year-olds. Christine, 21, will transfer to a California State University this fall. The 66-year-old retires next month.
When referring to a decade, add –s. Do not use an apostrophe before the “s.” The new student assistant is in his 20s.
