In text, academic degrees should always be spelled out and are not capitalized.
Chris earned an associate’s degree. Brant holds a master’s degree in business administration.
When used after a name, use the abbreviation with periods and set off by commas. Santa Monica College alumnus John Doe, A.S., was recently elected to the city council. Avoid redundancies, such as Dr. Mary Smith, M.D. Instead, Dr. Mary Smith or Mary Smith, M.D. Do not use “degree” with abbreviations.
